David Bowie - The Man Who Sold The World (1970) HQ,Music,The Man Who Sold The World,David Bowie (Celebrity),Psychedelic Rock (Musical Genre),Glam Rock (Musical Genre),Heavy Metal (Musical Genre),Classic Rock (Musical Genre),Retro Style (Media Genre),70's,New,This is the title track from David Bowie's third album, The Man Who Sold The World. I was surprised to find out the LP was released first in the US in November 1970 and then after in the UK in April 1971. Stranger still is that I never heard any of the album's tracks played on FM radio until late 1972 and, much more, in 1973. I don't know if this album was a "sleeper" or what ... it is without question one of my most favorite David Bowie albums from his early period. The songs are not only striking musically, but fascinating lyrically, intellectual, enigmatic, and often at least loosely, if not intimately, based on some literary work, such as those of Friedrich Nietzsche, Franz Kafka, and H. P. Lovecraft, as well as from personal experience. Bowie was and is a true genius really, who may have rode into fame on the crest of psychedelic and glam rock, but has hardly ever been one to be easily categorized. This LP in particular was way ahead of its time, inspiring later forms of music that would not begin to appear until the 1980s and 1990s, such as new wave, darkwave, goth rock, and artists such as Bauhaus, Gary Numan, Nine Inch Nails, and Nirvana. His longevity in the world of music proves that one can make a brilliant and lasting career by "thinking outside of the box" rather than by conforming to commercially popular (and thus, safe) trends and genres. The tracks on The Man Who Sold The World are either darkly psychological in nature or else explore the realms of science and speculative fiction. Nearly all, as I mentioned, are at least partly based on a literary or poetic work. The title track, "The Man Who Sold The World," which is the song used for this music video, owes much to the poem "Antigonish" by (William) Hughes Mearns. The third and final stanza from the poem appears at the beginning of my video. This song was also a favorite of the late Kurt Cobain and was covered by Nirvana in November 1993.
