A lot of you have been asking me about what the pedals on the harp do, so we filmed my feet at work during the shoot for Sugar Plum in December. As you may be aware, harp pedals are each assigned a letter name as is visible in this video. Each pedal has the opportunity to change the length of all the strings with the corresponding letter name not once, but twice, giving the harp the capability to have any letter name as a sharp, a natural or a flat (but because of the mechanism, all the octaves of that letter name change at the same time). The pedals are ordered in the way shown to allow for easy modulating, and usually if the piece sticks to the rules of harmony this allows most pedalling to be done with alternating feet, or two feet on either side of the instrument, rather than one foot having to do too much solo work, or in extreme cases, having to put both feet on one side (we don't like having to do this!). When I practise a piece that involves a lot of footwork it also adds an extra layer of work into my routine - so, where I would ordinarily practise the left hand and the right hand separately before playing a section through together, with something like this arrangement I would have to practise in this order: 1. Feet alone (looking at feet) 2. Left hand and feet (looking at hands) 3. Right hand and feet (still looking at hands!) 4. All together As another layer of memorising this is quite time consuming, and you are always relying on the feet to remember the physical feel of the process, because you cannot look at them and play! Trust in your muscle memory is essential. In case anyone is wondering, I wear dance shoes to work the pedals when I play - they aren't really very glamorous but they are comfortable and I am able to feel the pedals through the sole, which to be honest is all I care about when I have this much footwork to do! These shoes have a cuban heel, which allows me to keep my heels on the floor at all times even when moving around a lot. This is essential so my back is supported whilst playing.
