Cyberpunk 2077 Language Discussion - How far is too far Discussion in Video Games' started by soad3. Today at 6:59 PM. I? Harlequin Member Persephone Member #259 Today at 2.05 PM Stuff I didn't like: • V's underwear just looked too sexed up and uncomfortable/impractical. (I'm guessing underwear may be customisable but still, they picked this for the demo.) • Jackie using “pussy“ to mean “coward“, one of the guards using "cocksucker* as a slur • The game's Ul referring to grown-ass women as girls • Art style seemed a bit bland, honestly #873 Today at 308 PM World and gameplay looked cool but the unnecessary female nudity and constant use of the word “cunt“ for edge points really put me off J #908 Today at 3:12 PM Really hoping there's “endless“ runs or different factions to play for/against/with. Would love to just live in this world a la Shadowrun. Live life as a runner and just make my space in the world. Unicorn Member A lot of the dialogue seemed to have quite a few “problematic” langauge that I feel wouldn't persist 50 years in the future - calling people “pussy.“ or even the overuse of “bitch.“ Hopefully that gets a once-over though. Laiza Member #1385 Today at 4:34 PM SmokingBun said: I Okay fine, suggest some dialogue changes then Would it have the same effect if he called them dirt-lickers or something? Nonsense words or fake-insults would feel silly For starters, don't use “pussy“, use something generic like “weak shit“ instead. Don't use “cunt“ (especially if the game is supposed to take place in LA and not in Australia or the UK), use literally anything else that isn't a gendered slur. Persephone Member And fictional universes use made-up slurs all the fuckin' time. This isn’t a new problem specific to Cyberpunk 2077. Don’t make excuses for them. #1434 Today at 4:44 PM Grimminski said: I Shit Piss Fuck Cunt Cocksucker Motherfucker Tits •deep gasp* baaaaaaad words Y'all got no problem turning a dude to mist but this is the debate of the thread? No wonder CDPR didn't want to show anything. Imao thats not what we're saying but keep acting like minorities not wanting to hear slurs thrown around for 100 hours in a fucking fictional future setting that has no reason to use such language is unreasonable ig •1450 Today at 4:47 PM Smoking8un said: I It's supposed to be an ugly and terrible world through and through. Harlequin So when you hear “pussy“ in the game, you have the same gross reaction you would as in real life, that's the point Member But when it's said by your protagonist's partner and your protagonist doesn't react to it (or get the option to react to it), the game also kind of implies that it's not a big deal and there’s nothing wrong with it. They could've also opted to have their futuristic society be past homophobia, racism and sexism and still shown all the worst sides of humanity. People can just all treat each other like shit equally :p. As BossAttack said, if these terms actually refer to narrative themes and issues like homophobia and sexism are addressed in the story, it's fine. But if they aren't and they're just throwing these terms in as random standard swear words without any kind of reflection. I'll view that very critically.
Laiza Member #1707 Today at 5:33 PM Mind you, you’re right in that sexism is likely to persist for quite some time because the patriarchy is just that infused into our society at this point in time, but you know what? I don't give a fuck. I don't care how "realistic" it is. All I care is that I want to be able to play without constantly being reminded that "oh hey, people still see my gender as weak and unworthy of common respect" all the goddamn time through their careless use of targeted slurs. That's literally all I'm asking for. Bansai said: i The only part I agree is about gay being synonym for bad, or any other racial slur for that matter, you’ll find no argument here. Other than that? I disagree. If people are free to use male curse words towards both males and females, then I don’t see any problems with the reverse also taking place, as long as it's not directed exclusively towards one gender, because that would frankly feel pretty exploitative. However, I'm not from US (where the use of the word "cunt" is faux pas for the most part) nor am I a native english speaker, so maybe my notion of linguistic do's or dont's is a bit jaded. Either way, to me this is a non-issue and I even welcome the fact that lowlifes are speaking like you would expect from them. Mate, if you're not a target of these slurs all the time. I'm afraid your opinion on the matter is almost entirely irrelevant.

By seeing what you say happen in life, to see it happen to friends or loved ones. We're not blind. We can care and we can feel. We think and we can react. We're going to have opinions. Saying we're not allowed to have any because we're not something.that's pretty damn blind and arrogant to say. In the end we're human too. I said your opinion does not carry as much weight as a womens, not that you can't have one. Women's opinions hold more weight on women's issues than a man. No matter how much you empathasis you aren't going to understand it as much as a women. Just like I wouldn't assume my opinion would matter more or even the same on issues that affect black people then a black person, or any other minority. You don't know what hearing those slurs against you all the time feels like, cus they aren't directed towards you. #1854 Today at 603 PM Nekrono said: i Lol can't believe people actually arguing about slang words like ■’pussy" or "cunt", it's almost as hilarious as that other post earlier about someone complaining how all the NPC's in the demo don't look friendly or welcoming, I mean this is what they're going for isn't it? Nobody forced them to write it like that, they could have just not done it, was that really integral to the experience? Their vision would be so compromised they could not have made the game without it? Nekrono said: I I swear some people take some stuff way too seriously. Maybe don't downplay women's concerns.

"Pussy" is not acceptable in any context. Full-stop. No amount of handwringing is going to change the fact that the word’s very root lies within notions of feminine things being weak, which is a notion that we're still trying to actively fight against to this day. The fact that the player character can't even comment on his use of it alone says a lot about the game and the way it's being written. It is absolutely one of the first words I’d expect to see excised from the common lexicon in the future, along with the use of “gay" as a synonym for “bad*. Click to expand... God what a world of whiners we live on. We can t have a single discussion without people getting offended for everything and now you are trying to ban the word pussy!? How about fighting for world hunger or something more relevant come on
