I guess they used excessive amount of iodine, note the smoke has violet tone, while it should be brown. But you don't have to take my word for it of course:

I used to make an ammonium triodide, maybe there is slight difference, though behaves pretty much the same:

Hehehe, this thing is more sensitive than nitroglycerin and this damn smoke is actually a
suspended matter of burned iodine. When it cools and comes down it leaves nasty brown spots on any surface that is nearly impossible to clean.

Nope, artist are weird.
When you put some time and effort into your work sometime its hard to take criticism, especially in rude harsh form. But on those 2 projects everyone burned out from extra hours and idiotic management.
